Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Will the training camp this year be the same as 2025?
A: We got a lot of feedback from parents, athletes, and learned a lot our first time around. We are excited to bring those ideas to the table and make the 2026 camp even better and also allow for repeatability for those hoping to apply and attend again!
Q: Do athletes need a parent or guardian to attend with them?
A: Yes! Coaches will only be responsible for athletes during training sessions. We ask that athletes have a parent or guardian present for the week.
Q: Does everyone who applies get to attend?
A: No, unfortunately we have limited spots and will be making our selection of athletes in a TBD deadline.
Q: Who can apply?
A: Any youth athlete that falls under the 2025-2026, U15-U19/20 age category may apply!
Q: Why is there an application process and deadline?
A: The deadline matters for a few reasons. It gives us time to review the full pool of applicants alongside Katsu so we can match athletes well in both ability and setting quality. While there’s an expectation of a high level (last year included national champions from other countries and multiple top-10 USA Nationals finishers), we place just as much value on the goals and intent each athlete brings.
Q: Why is it in late August?
A: The training camp takes place in August with the goal as a preseason primer to get athletes thinking differently on how to approach climbing and training. We are juggling tricky placement of B-Pumps packed schedule, World Cup Dates, Asia Youth Championships, USA Youth Nationals, Youth Worlds, and some early school starts in the US. We are hopeful Athletes are able to work with their schools in the meantime (similar to when worlds was around this date) while we look to optimize the timing.
Q: Are accommodations expensive?
A: We recommend looking at Airbnbs before hotels as they can be a great alternative and low as $80-$100 a night!
Q: Where should we stay in Tokyo?
A: We strongly recommend staying near the JR Yamanote Line. It’s the primary train line that circles central Tokyo. It offers direct access to major attractions and easy connections to other train lines and subways.
Q: Who do I reach out to with any additional questions?
A: Please use the “Contact Us” feature at the bottom of the page with any questions or concerns not addressed above!
Q: Should I learn Japanese?
A: Absolutely! Any effort is helpful and truly appreciated. While Google Translate can be useful, learning a few encouraging phrases or commonly used climbing terms will go a long way. Even a simple attempt to speak someone’s native language is often met with genuine gratitude.
